Globivia · privacy
Privacy, in plain words. Including for children.
You can play Globivia without an account, and playing that way tells us nothing about who you are. This page says what is counted, what stays on your device, what changes if you sign in, and where we stand on children and classrooms.
The short version
- No account is needed to play. Signing in is optional.
- We never store your name, your email address or your IP address.
- No advertising. No ads, no advertising trackers, and nothing about you is sold or passed on.
- We count crowds, not people. How many played on a day, from which countries, and how they scored.
Children and classrooms
Globivia is a geography game for everyone, and teachers can use it as a classroom warm-up. This is our position on children's privacy.
- Children should play as guests. The game is fully playable without an account, and no account should be made for a child. From a guest we collect no name, no email address, no photo, no voice, no location more exact than a country, and nothing that singles out one child or one device.
- Sign-in is not for children under 13. Sign-in uses a Google account. We do not ask anyone's age, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from a child under 13, or under the age of digital consent where you live, which is as high as 16 in parts of Europe. If you are younger than that, please play without signing in.
- Nothing a child types is sent to us. Answers are checked on the device. The game has no chat, no comments, no profiles and no public list of players.
- No advertising and no profiling. Nothing collected here is used to build a picture of any person, child or adult.
- For teachers. Project the game, or let students play as guests on their own devices. There is no roster, no student account and nothing to install. More on the teachers page.
- For parents and guardians. If you believe your child has signed in, write to us at the address below and we will remove the record.
Playing as a guest
- What stays on your device. Your streak, today's result, your recent scores and your sound settings are saved in your own browser, so the game remembers you tomorrow. Clearing this site's data in your browser erases them.
- What reaches us. When a game is started, finished or shared, the game sends a short anonymous signal and we add one to a daily tally. The tally records the day, the number right out of five, the score and the time taken, a streak range (none, one day, two to six days, or a week and more), how the visitor arrived (directly, from a shared link, from social media or from a search), and the country the request came from. It holds no name, no account, no device identifier and no IP address, and no line in it describes a single person.
- Cookies. Globivia sets no cookie for a guest. Cloudflare, which delivers the site, may set a short-lived security cookie when it needs to tell a person from a bot.
If you sign in
Signing in keeps a streak across devices and opens Field Notes, the study atlas. It is done with a Google account.
- What we keep. Google confirms who you are to our server. We turn your Google account number into a scrambled code that cannot be turned back, and file your game record under that code: your recent games (score, number right and date), your totals, the places you have named or missed, when you first signed in and last played, and the country you last signed in from.
- What we do not keep. Your Google account number, your name, your picture and your email address are not stored on our servers. Your name and picture sit only inside an encrypted cookie in your own browser, so the page can show that you are signed in. That cookie lasts 30 days and is used for nothing else.
- Signing out signs you out on every device.
- Having a record removed. Write to us at the address below. Because the record carries no name or email address, we will ask for the date you first signed in and roughly how many games you have played, so that we remove the right one.
Who else is involved
- Cloudflare delivers the site and protects it from abuse. Like any web host it handles each visitor's IP address in order to send the page, and uses it briefly to stop floods of requests. Its analytics show us page views, referring sites, countries and browser types as totals, without cookies and without following anyone from site to site.
- Google supplies the sign-in button. The button loads with the game, so your browser contacts Google when the page opens, whether or not you sign in. Google tells us nothing about you unless you choose to sign in, and Google's own privacy policy covers what it does with that request.
- Wikipedia. Each answer links to its Wikipedia article. Nothing goes to Wikipedia unless you follow the link.
